The Whistleblowers Act is an important regulation implemented in response to the EU Whistleblowers Directive. The Directive, adopted in the EU in 2019, has as its main objective to promote compliance with EU rules and to provide the highest possible level of protection for those who report breaches of these rules. In Sweden, the Whistleblower Act entered into force on December 17, 2021 and covers all types of businesses, regardless of their form of association. Public authorities are also covered by the law.
As of December 17, 2023, all companies with more than 50 employees must have an established whistleblowing function.
